Ocean’s 8

An all-female sequel (sort of) to Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12, and Ocean’s 13, this movie follows the heist formula pretty closely. There are lots of twists and turns in the plot, some of which feel a little intellectually lazy. But this is not an intellectual movie. It’s a trifle, entertaining and light, but nothing that will really stick with you. Perfect for summer. A true popcorn movie. Sandra Bullock is the clear star of the movie, playing Debbie Ocean, sister of the deceased Danny Ocean from the earlier movies. She is all right in this role. I wanted to know more about Cate Blanchett’s character and Anne Hathaway ran away with her role, nearly stealing the film (although there’s a plot twist with her character that felt a bit false to me). But most of the rest of the cast had very little to do which is a shame since so many of them are so fun. All in all, it was an ok movie that delivered exactly what I expected it to.

With Pat at the Concord Regal.
