Wild Nights With Emily ☆☆☆☆

Molly Shannon is such a surprise as Emily Dickinson. Very fun and strange movie about Dickinson’s love affair with her sister-in-law.

All True ☆☆

Kenneth Branaugh plays Will Shakespeare in retirement, returned home after his theater, The Globe, has burned to the ground. Mourning his son who (spoiler alert) killed himself several years earlier under the weight of his father’s expectations, Will can’t see that the real talent among his children is possessed by his son’s twin sister, Judity. Judy Dench is good as Shakespeare’s wife but the movie is slow and not as profound as it wants to be.

The Dead Don’t Die ☆☆☆

Surprisingly fun zombie movie by Jim Jarmusch whose work is pretty hit or miss for me. This one was mostly a hit. Great work from Adam Driver, Bill Murray, and Chloe Sevigney who understand that “things won’t end well” once the zombies show up.

Late Night ☆☆☆☆

Mindy Kaling made me laugh as Kelly on The Office but I wasn’t a fan of The Mindy Project. I find that she’s kind of amusing sometimes but rarely laugh out loud funny. She wrote this movie and, I guess not surprisingly, I found it to be amusing but rarely laugh out loud funny. It’s also pretty smart and has some great moments, especially for Emma Thompson who plays a 50-something talk show host who seems to be nearing the end of her career. Despite the unrealistic ending, I really enjoyed the movie.

Chernobyl ☆☆☆☆☆

I had been hearing such good things about this HBO mini-series that I did a one week trial of HBO so that I could binge-watch it. I’m so glad that I did. This is simply great television. The last episode in particular was masterful as the events of Chernobyl are explained in a trial of the participants. It’s hard to watch at times but I would definitely recommend that you find a way to do it.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

I actually really love monster movies. I loved watching them on TV on Saturday afternoons when I was a kid and have enjoyed many of them (Pacific Rim comes to mind) as an adult. I didn’t realize this movie was a sequel to the 2014 Godzilla, a true stinker. This new version stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown, three actors I really enjoy, none of whom were in the 2014 version (hence, my ignorance). There is nothing that would make me recommend that anyone see this movie.
