Killing Eve

The best show I’ve seen this year is Killing Eve. The story focuses on a woman in intelligence in England and the assassin she begins to track. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer are excellent as the two women. Much of the pleasure of the show comes from upending the spy genre where the intelligence agent tracks the bad guy. How often do we get a story where both the villain and the investigator are women? I just finished watching the season finale for the second time. It is full of dark, twisted comedy surrounded by tragedy and heartbreak. Jodie Comer evokes sympathy as the super assassin Villanelle, who seems to crave love even as she tries to kill anyone who gets close to her. The middle episodes are uneven with some huge leaps of logic. But the beginning of the series and especially the last episode make it worth your while to gloss over the illogic. I love this show despite its unevenness and am so looking forward to a second season.

On BBC America.
